| An Investigation into the Efficacy of Visual Materials on the Iranian EFL Learners’ Oral Fluency |

| The present study aimed at examining the impact of visual material instruction on EFL students’ speaking skills. A total of 45 Iranian pre-Intermediate EFL students in four intact classes received instruction, of which 23 comprised experimental group and 22 comprised control group. During the spring 2024, the experimental group received visual material instruction in speaking comprehension for approximately 60 minutes per week. Control group received no visual material instruction in speaking skills and traditional teaching methods (multiple choices, gap filling and matching) for the same amount of time were utilized during five weeks. Two picture descriptions were used as pretest and posttest to evaluate student’s level of speaking skills. Independent samples t-test (t(43) = 3.32, p = 0.002) indicated that there were statistical differences in speaking skills between students of two groups. In order to benefit from positive effect of visual materials on speaking skills, instructors should spend more time on teaching students how to use them, not just familiarize learners with visual materials. More data would strengthen the impact of the results. However, these findings offer practical and theoretical implications for using visual materials in foreign language education. |
