Error Correction Codes as Metacognitive Tools: Enhancing Writing Accuracy Among Iranian EFL Learners

Corrective feedback is essential for second language writing development, sparking ongoing debates about the effectiveness of various feedback modes. While traditional direct correction offers immediate solutions, recent research indicates that indirect feedback strategies, such as Error Correction Codes (ECC), may better foster learner autonomy and metalinguistic awareness. This study examined the impact of ECC on the writing ability of Iranian EFL learners, aiming to assess whether ECC, as an indirect corrective feedback method, could significantly enhance writing accuracy. A quasi-experimental design was used, involving 50 intermediate Iranian EFL learners at a language institute in Hamedan. Participants were randomly assigned to an experimental group receiving ECC-based feedback and a control group receiving traditional direct correction. Both groups completed IELTS-based writing pretests and posttests, with the intervention spanning 10 sessions over five weeks. Data were analyzed using ANCOVA to address potential pretest differences. Results indicated a statistically significant improvement in writing performance for the experimental group, who outperformed the control group on the posttest. An effect size of 34.4% highlighted a notable increase in writing accuracy attributable to the ECC treatment. These findings align with theories such as Schmidt’s Noticing Hypothesis and Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory, emphasizing learner involvement and scaffolding. The study concludes by discussing pedagogical implications and suggesting directions for future research on ECC in varied educational contexts, including the integration of digital resources.
