| چکیده مقاله |
| Textbooks are considered as influential tools for introducing learners to the customs and societies of the language they aim to learn. However, due to the widespread use of English as a lingua franca in various international contexts, investigation of cultural content EFL textbooks has gained a lot of interest over the past decades. This study examines the contents of three English textbooks currently used in senior high school for their cultural types, senses and dimensions. To this end, we adopted Cortazzi and Jin’s (1999) framework, Adaskou, Britten and Fahsi’s (1990) framework (modified by Tajeddin & Shohreh Teimournezhad, 2014) and Moran’s 4P framework (Moran, 2001) to investigate the breadth and depth of cultural presentation. We found that the Iranian English textbooks prioritize source culture, with limited representation of international and target cultures. The textbooks were found not to present a wide variety of cultures, lifestyles, and perspectives, to engage the learners with English as a global language. Based on the findings, suggestions for English as a foreign language (EFL) textbook writers, EFL teachers and textbook researchers are provided. |
