| Results of research conducted to date indicate that task characteristics and the conditions of their execution can have different effects on the quality of second language learners' performance. The purpose of this research is to extend this research area by investigating the extent of the effect of transcribing tasks with different characteristics on language learners' oral performance. To this end, forty-five Iranian language learners were asked to transcribe their narratives of three pictorial stories, each of which differed in terms of story structure and plot complexity. Their performance was recorded, transcribed, and analyzed within the framework of complexity, accuracy, and fluency measures. The findings showed that anticipating the need to transcribe a structured pictorial story based on a single storyline led to an increase in accuracy and fluency and a decrease in speech complexity. Conversely, anticipating transcription after narrating a pictorial story with a weak structure and two intertwined storylines led to an increase in complexity and accuracy, but a decrease in speech fluency. These findings have pedagogical and theoretical implications, which are discussed in relation to relevant theories and existing research evidence. The results can be particularly valuable in designing effective pedagogical tasks aimed at improving learners’ speaking skills, as they demonstrate that the type of narrative task and the subsequent transcription of oral output can direct learners’ attention to different aspects of language. From a theoretical perspective, these findings also provide a deeper understanding of the interaction between cognitive processing, task difficulty, and the quality of learners’ performance. |
