| چکیده مقاله |
| Materials development for young learners is a subfield within Applied Linguistics warranting further attention as it is filled with numerous contentions yet to be resolved, and as the age of language learning is reportedly decreasing in many educative contexts across the world. To help address this comparatively less explored area of inquiry, this study has probed into how the existing literature reflects the major tenets governing materials preparation aimed at young children in language education. The investigation was conducted in two phases: initially, a careful perusal of the pertinent literature on the issue was undertaken to see what trends, if any, could be identified vis-à-vis English for Young Learners (EYL) materials development. Also, to see how the extracted principles at work in the design of such instructional materials might play out in actual practice, a case study of an internationally renowned publication used in Iran was conducted. The analysis of the series American Family and Friends showed all the major distinctive features of the genre identified in the literature, namely the use of a storyline, fun and humor, cross-curricular content, and Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAPs), were operative in them. Implications for how such insight might benefit teachers as materials developers and evaluators are finally drawn. |
