چکیده مقاله
This study aimed to explore the skills that Iranian secondary school EFL teachers perceive as essential for being effective, as well as the challenges and barriers to realizing teacher effectiveness. This study employed a qualitative design, including 24 in-depth interviews with EFL teachers from Ilam, Lorestan, and Kermanshah provinces, Iran. Following the principles established by Braun and Clarke (2006), the interviews were transcribed and analyzed through thematic analysis. The findings revealed that teachers placed a high level of importance on six major skill categories: relational and supportive skills, professional skills, pedagogical skills, personal traits, classroom management, and assessment. Concerning challenges and barriers to teacher effectiveness, six major categories were identified: educational system, teaching aids, students, textbooks, teachers, and parents. The study ends with implications for enhancing teacher training programs and points out the critical role of the Ministry of Education in addressing these challenges to strengthen EFL teacher effectiveness in Iranian secondary schools.
