چکیده مقاله
This study investigates Iranian EFL university learners’ emotional experiences across three communicative task types of face-to-face group discussions, synchronous online voice discussions, and AI-mediated text-chats, and how these experiences impact their participation in a Listening–Speaking course. Thirty-one first-year BA students in English Language and Literature at Lorestan University participated in a six-week course that integrated all three tasks. Data were collected through reflective whole-class discussions, and an open-ended written survey. Thematic analysis identified emotional safety as the most influential factor shaping students’ willingness to participate. Although face-to-face discussions were perceived as meaningful and engaging, many learners, particularly those with higher anxiety or lower confidence, experienced fear of making mistakes and being judged, which limited their engagement. Online voice discussions created a more relaxed environment; however, slower pace and lack of visual cues affected the natural flow of conversation. AI-mediated text-chats, in contrast, offered the strongest sense of emotional safety and provided learners with a low-pressure, nonjudgmental context for practice. Students also noted that AI interactions lacked authenticity. The findings suggest that AI can serve as a valuable tool for reducing anxiety and practicing language learning that can be integrated into human-based interactions.
