AI-Enhanced German Language Learning: A Narrative Review of Mobile and Generative AI Tools in Second Language Acquisition

Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly transformed the landscape of second language acquisition (SLA), offering new tools that personalize instruction, automate feedback, and foster more interactive learning environments. This narrative review synthesizes current research on AI-driven technologies—including mobile applications, intelligent tutoring systems (ITS), and generative AI tools—and examines their relevance to learners of German as a foreign language (DaF). The review aims to clarify how AI-based systems support key dimensions of SLA such as motivation, engagement, communicative competence, and self-regulated learning. To achieve this, research published within the last decade was analyzed across language learning technologies, with particular attention to how AI functionalities (e.g., speech recognition, adaptive learning, error classification, and conversational generation) influence learning processes. Findings indicate that mobile applications with gamified AI elements can increase persistence and vocabulary acquisition, although limitations remain in providing contextualized communication practice. Intelligent tutoring systems demonstrate strong potential in delivering individualized instruction and formative feedback, yet their integration into German language curricula is still emerging. Generative AI—especially large language models (LLMs)—shows promise for expanding opportunities for meaningful interaction, learner-driven content creation, and personalized writing and speaking practice. However, concerns regarding accuracy, overreliance, and ethical use persist. Collectively, the literature suggests that AI technologies can substantially enhance German language development when used to supplement—but not replace—pedagogical instruction. This review concludes with implications for DaF educators and identifies future research needs, including longitudinal evaluation, learner affect, and the pedagogical design of AI-supported language tasks.
