چکیده مقاله
In learning a foreign language, being able to converse with native speakers and to be familiar with the target culture are crucial so that recently most researchers pay attention to the importance of these concepts. This study aims at exploring situational self-esteem and willingness to communicate and their relationship with sociolinguistic competence. To this end, English Language bachelor students, 64 respondents, of the University of Zanjan were asked to complete the situational self-esteem questionnaire, the willingness to communicate questionnaire, and the sociolinguistic competence questionnaire. Pearson coefficient of linear correlation was used to test the correlation between variables. Neither the results of the relationship between situational self-esteem and sociolinguistic competence nor the results of the relationship between willingness to communicate and sociolinguistic competence were statistically significant. To provide a suitable learning environment for students’ success, directors and instructors had better understand individual differences and create chances for them to be promoted to a higher level. They also have to be aware that there could be students with higher level of willingness to communicate or self-esteem incapable of the proper use of language, the normality of speech within specific socio-cultural context, and the right level of formality for the specific situation.
