| . Despite several studies examining similarities and differences in apology strategies between native English speakers and Iranian EFL learners, bilingual (Persian-Turkish) learners have been largely overlooked. Moreover, variations in their choices across different contexts have not been systematically compared. The present study investigates apology strategies in diverse situations among Iranian bilingual (Persian-Turkish) EFL learners and native English speakers. A discourse completion test (DCT) was administered to 47 native speakers abroad and 47 EFL students from two Iranian provinces to assess similarities and differences. To ensure accuracy, the Cambridge Michigan test was administered to Iranian participants, selecting only those with high proficiency. Sugimoto’s classification was employed to analyze the relationship between the two groups. Results indicate that four subsets of primary strategies and two subsets of secondary strategies were used, while seldom-used strategies were absent in both groups. Chi-square analysis revealed that, except for two cases, responses were similar across most situations, demonstrating a significant relationship between the groups in apology strategy use. Findings suggest that bilingual (Persian-Turkish) learners behaved similarly to native speakers in most contexts, likely due to their advanced proficiency. These results hold implications for teachers, policymakers, curriculum designers, and teacher training centers. |
