Defining the Characteristics of Teachers Equipped with Pedagogical Content Knowledge in English Instruction

This article examines the defining characteristics of English language teachers who demonstrate strong Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK), a construct originally articulated by Shulman (1987) and subsequently adapted to second language education. While content knowledge and general pedagogy are essential, PCK emphasizes the integration of disciplinary expertise with instructional strategies that make subject matter comprehensible to diverse learners. Drawing on a conceptual review of literature published between 2000 and 2025, this study synthesizes findings from applied linguistics, teacher cognition, and educational technology to identify the traits that distinguish PCK equipped English teachers. The analysis highlights seven interrelated characteristics: deep mastery of linguistic content; pedagogical adaptability through scaffolding and differentiation; sensitivity to learner backgrounds and common misconceptions; curricular and assessment literacy aligned with international standards; reflective and iterative practice; integration of digital tools and multimodal resources; and ethical awareness that fosters intercultural competence. These characteristics are situated within the broader transformations of English language teaching over the past quarter century, including globalization, the rise of communicative and task based approaches, and the digital turn accelerated by the COVID 19 pandemic. The article concludes by discussing implications for teacher education, policy, and classroom practice, arguing that cultivating PCK is essential for preparing English teachers to act not merely as transmitters of knowledge but as transformative facilitators of learning in the 21st century.
