The Role of Generative AI-assisted Instruction in Enhancing Emotional Engagement of EFL Learners

The research on the role of implementing AI-assisted language tools has soared in the world of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Emotional engagement—including affective dimensions such as anxiety, motivation, and enjoyment —has emerged as an essential factor in shaping learners’ attitudes toward language learning. The purpose of this study was to investigate how AI-generated learning materials influence learners’ emotional engagement in EFL classrooms. Forty female high school students aged 15–16 from an art-focused school participated in a four-week intervention. Due to the lack of overhead projectors, AI-generated tools, such as images, were printed and displayed in class, while music tracks and short videos were shared through the students’ social media group. Learners’ spoken reflections were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed thematically to identify emotional patterns emerging from AI-supported learning experiences. The findings revealed that generative AI-assisted instruction fostered positive emotional engagement by enhancing motivation, stimulating creativity, and reducing language anxiety. The study suggests that incorporating AI-generated multimodal resources can promote emotionally supportive learning environments and expand access to creative, affective language instruction in resource-limited EFL settings. The results contribute to the growing body of knowledge on integrating AI in language learning.
