The Impact of Automated Writing Evaluation on EFL Learners’ Writing Motivation and Self-regulation

As a crucial element in teaching and learning a foreign language, writing is deemed to be one of the most challenging tasks in language studies. In the present study, the effects of Automated Writing Evaluation (AWE) approach on EFL learners' writing motivation and self-regulation have been investigated. Through a quasi-experimental method, this research aimed to provide insights into the potential mechanisms through which AWE might enhance not only writing performance but also writing evaluation using novel tools. Through an exploration of these outcomes, this study tried to contribute to the ongoing discourse on effective pedagogical practices in EFL writing instruction and offered implications for classroom practice and curriculum design. 50 students were divided into two groups (experimental and control) each containing 25. According to the results and with regard to the impact of AWE, it was found that AWE affects both the dependent variables, namely learners’ writing motivation and learners’ self-regulation of Iranian EFL learners. The results of this study add a new dimension to the growing body of research regarding the effect of AWE on EFL learners' writing performance.
