TPCK in the Digital Era: Integrating Educational Data Literacy and Hybrid Design Competency in Teacher Education

Teacher preparation is experiencing a revolution due to the advances in Artificial Intelligence and the global shift toward hybrid learning. In recent years, Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPCK) has been a matter of interest. However, little attention has been paid to the new skills required for modern teachers. The present study is an attempt to address the gaps identified in pre-service teacher training programs. It proposes an enhanced TPCK Model. This expanded framework integrates two key competencies: a) Educational Data Literacy, which focuses on effective collection, analysis, and interpretation of data from digital activities, and b) Hybrid Design Competency, which highlights the consistent planning and teaching across both virtual and physical environments. Through a systematic conceptual analysis of the conventional TPCK framework, a qualitative research design was employed to outline the new competencies. The approach is based on systematic review and foresight methods to explore the limitations of the existing model and develop a new framework. The study results in an expanded conceptual model that redefines effective implementation of TPCK in ELT in the digital era. This enhanced model suggests integrating courses in Educational Data Literacy and Hybrid Design Competency into pre-service ELT curricula to ensure future teachers’ transition from simple technology users to analytical designers and data-savvy professionals.
